Research Process

I wanted to take some time and think about the research process for this framework. So far I've just been writing and organizing what I've found, yet I have a feeling I will need to improve the structure.

At the very least, I should list my research sources. Below is a list of the books that I have read, and will probably reference thorughout the process of creating the learning framework. This list is prioritized based on the direct application of the material to the learning framework.

Step 3: Summarize The Research

Now we want to take what we have found and turn it into a concise paragraph that teaches the user about the topic and cites our sources. Zettelkasten

I wanted to shave off some of the books from my Research Sources list in order to get the core ideas and advice I wanted faster. I started skimming the 'How to Take Smart Notes'. In essence the book discusses the 'Zettelkasten', or slip-note box note taking method. I tried maintaining such a method through various different strategies a few years ago, but abanadoned the project due to its complexity.

It felt as if the process of a complicated inter-linking note taking system wasn't worth the proposed benefits, especially as I wasn't actively researching or writing about anything at the time. It was hard to justify spending dozens of hours buildling the framework, and taking notes for it not to be used in a constructive manner.

The wall I just ran into was considering taking a break in from my current approach in order to re-build my Zettelkasten, and use it for this writing and research project.

HOWEVER; I consider this to be an extreme deviation from what my intended goal for this project is. Taking the time to rebuild it would lose the interest I have in the project as I would stop seeing the immediate growth and connection of ideas, even if it is linear, as I would at my current pace. Stopping now when everything is in good working order in an attempt to increase my intellectual or writing pace would only put the entire project at risk in its current state.

I will not change the method of note taking during this project.

I will not pick up the zettelkasten until this learning framework project is complete.

The pace at which I am reading and researching is satisfactory for my goals.

The Goal

In the next month I will finish the planning section of the learning framework book by March 2024. So that I can self-publish the learning framework as a book by the end of August 2024. In order to reach this goal I will spend 1 hour a day writing and editing. To achieve this I will dedicate 1 hour in the morning, or throughout the day, everyday over the course of March. By achieving this goal I will keep on pace with my long term goal of publishing books on the topics I have so deeply researched, and can share my understanding with my friends and family.

Organized Advice

I've decided that it would be best for me to conduct my research and then organize the ideas that I find into a single, organized list. I expect that there will be a lot of overlap between sources. But getting ideas down to their smallest point should help me seperate them out and reorganize them.

I don't yet know the order of the advice, so everything will just go it one pile for now.

Meta-Learning:

Meta-learning means learning about the process of learning. It's about the different models of the brain and learning.

Knowing how your brain works when learn effectively helps you learn faster and better. It means you can adjust how you study or practice to make sure you're getting the most out of your time.

Includes: Psychological process of learning. Different mental models of the learning process. Key lexicon for discussing learning in the brain. Neuroscientific view of the brain. How to best take care of your body in order to learn more effectively.

Does not include: Any advice on learning. How the brain works (past encoding and retrieving information/skills).

This phase is crucial because it fuels motivation and ensures the learner's commitment by aligning the learning process with their intrinsic interests and goals. It establishes a clear direction and purpose, which are essential for sustained engagement and perseverance.

Advice and activities that encourage self-reflection, goal setting, research on the subject matter, and preliminary planning belong here. Elements that involve goal specificity, scheduling, resource allocation, and scope limitation are essential. Conversely, techniques focused on the act of learning itself, such as specific study methods or feedback loops, fall outside this category as they pertain to the execution rather than planning.

Conversely, strategies primarily concerned with reflection, feedback post-action, or long-term retention strategies do not belong, as these are part of later stages in the learning process.

These strategies are vital for overcoming plateaus, enhancing long-term retention, and achieving mastery. They introduce variety and challenges that stimulate further growth and prevent stagnation.

Techniques that optimize and elevate the learning process, such as "Use Spaced Repetition" and "Practice by the Clock in Short Bursts," fit here. Initial learning strategies, basic skill acquisition methods, and preliminary research do not belong, as enhancement strategies are intended for refining and advancing existing skills.
